Computational Thinking PO2 and DDDO PO2

This activity is one of the “maker” units that we use in classes. We have just written an article for Interface Magazine on how schools can use maker spaces and the maker philosophy in their classrooms.  Working with basic ingredients that any class can get hold of, cardboard, kebab skewers, tape, more cardboard!  It is possible for students to investigate gears, cams, axels, levers, pivots etc and design working automata.  By adding simple motors, servos, springs, rubber bands, the students can make these automata more complex and entertaining.  By adding more peripherals such as a Micro:Bit as in this case the automata can be used as a stand alone interactive display.

Currently we are delivering this unit in several classrooms and will add videos of what the students have created over time.
