Computational Thinking PO2
This coding activity can be completed using using Scratch or Tynker
This activity is an example of how a literacy focus can be “published” as an animation, created using coding. The purpose here is for students to re-tell a traditional tale that they have studied, break it down to its key elements, the plot, the characters, the key elements of the text and the props needed to re-tell the tale. They then storyboard this distilled version and use this distillation to help them code their final product. When we have delivered this lesson, we have found that the students immediately engage with the prospect of creating an animation to re-tell as simple story and their outputs are really very creative.
If your students are new to Scratch or Tynker then this scaffold unit will help them master the basic skills needed to create the animation: Traditional Tales Scaffold
If you have not used Scratch before then the following video tutorial may help you to become a little more confident with its learning potential. Scratch Tutorial
If you want to use Tynker to do this project and you are not a confident user of Tynker then these tutorials may be of use to you. The lessons illustrated here also apply to the blocks in Scratch and as such will work on Scratch too.
