Computational Thining – PO2

This activity was created in response to teachers wanting to create a resource related to “connections” and transport. We developed this “Sim City” type coding activity, linked to the drawing complex shapes activity to enable students to create a 2D birds eye view of a simple world that they then have to code.

In this example, the students have to create a single car and code the car to travel around a simple road circuit they design. As the activity progresses the students are asked to apply their new knowledge to add more cars, design busses and trucks to animate to travel around their increasingly busy roads. Finally the students are then asked to populate their town with buildings they design. This activity could then be updated to include people walking around the town. Once this activity is started, there is no limit to how far it could be expanded by those students who want to follow this line of investigation.
